Think about the two different demonstrations that took place outside this week.

First, explain what we did in the first ditch. Tell about the landforms you saw being formed. Explain how you knew what you were seeing. (example: A valley was formed because a low place between the two mountains was formed.)

Next, the second paragraph will tell about what we did in the ditch at the top of the hill and what you learned.

You will be graded on whether you used all of the vocabulary words correctly and if you followed the directions to form two paragraphs with topic sentences and concluding sentences and had all required information.

Use the following vocabulary in 2 well written paragraphs. Be sure to include an explanation of how you know each of the things you learned. You may type it here or write on a separate sheet of notebook paper. You will have 2 days to work on it before turning it in.
erosion sediment meander canyon delta
river basin deposition slope dam lake

On dirt day, the teachers made a small mountain out of dirt in the first ditch. We were exploring how landforms are formed. Mrs. Greenslade then caused erosion by using water to wash away dirt. She did this by using the water hose to make pretend rain fall on top of the mountain. She also used the water hose to make a basin and a canyon. A basin is a low bowl shaped area where water is drained. A canyon is a deep valley caused by erosion. As the water washed down the slope of the mountain it carried the dirt with it into the basin. The water and dirt then flowed into the river. At a place in the river some rocks caught some of the dirt. This looked like a dam and a lake were being made. Then the dam broke and the water flowed on down. The river meandered, or turned slow, and formed a delta of dirt. A Depositiondelta is a fan shaped deposit where a river meets a larger area of water. occurred as the dirt settled out of the water. When the dirt settled it became sediment. It was fun watching the water make landforms.

In the ditch at the top of the hill we learned about dams. The teachers built a bigger mountain of dirt than was in the first ditch. The teachers told us to split into groups of three people and build a dam. The dams were going to be used to stop the water from flowing down the slope to the river. The water that is held by the dam is a lake. We used sticks, logs, leaves, and dirt to build our dams. Mrs. Greenslade sprayed water on the mountain and the water flowed down the mountain behind our dams. The water made it through all the dams, but some dams did hold back some of the water forming little lakes. Then Mrs. Greenslade had us take apart our dams and then she sprayed all the leaves and dirt down the drain. On dirt day I learned a lot about how landforms are made from water and erosion. I also learned how erosion makes canyons and a delta. I loved dirt day and learning about landforms.
